Socastee is a charming community located in Horry County, South Carolina. Home to roughly 15,000 residents, Socastee is located near many beautiful beaches including Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach, Conway and Atlantic Beach. Residents enjoy sailing, fishing and camping at the many different beaches. Socastee residents are also fortunate enough to enjoy year round warm weather. In addition to the many beaches, Socastee residents enjoy golfing at the many golf courses in the area as well as spending time at the local water/amusement parks. Cultural opportunities are also abundant in Socastee and in the neighboring communities as there are many museums, zoos, aquariums and theaters, as well as a local farmer’s market. Socastee is considered a bedroom community to the more dense populations in Myrtle Beach and Surfside Beach. It is just minutes away from the beaches and all local attractions and amenities via Hwys 707, 544, and the 17 Bypass. Socastee is under the jurisdiction of Horry County Schools. The district is comprised of different attendance areas and in Socastee’s there are four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. In addition, there are a number of higher educational institutions in the area. Coastal Carolina University, located in Conway and just minutes away from Socastee is a public four-year Liberal Arts school offering degrees in forty-two fields of study. Horry-Georgetown Technical College is a comprehensive two-year community college/technical school that offers more than seventy types of programs, many of which are in today’s hottest career fields.
Socastee boasts a strong economy. In 2007 it was voted as one of Money magazine’s best places to live. The average per capita income is around $22,000. Most residents work in either the management/business fields or professional services. Residents also tend to work in the hospitality industry, healthcare, education and arts/recreation.
Points of Interest
The Socastee Historic District is a must-see for any history buff. This is one of the only remaining developments left in the country of post Civil War development. It consists of two homes, one store and a beautiful pecan grove. Residents enjoy spending much of their free time at Myrtle Beach and at the many museums and zoos in the area, including the SC Civil War Museum, the Waccatee Zoological Park and Ripley’s Aquarium. A number of local theater companies prosper in the area as well, including the Palace Theatre at Broadway, the Carolina Opry Theater, the Dixie Stampede Dinner attraction and Medieval Times.
Parks and Recreation
There are no shortage of outdoor recreational opportunities for the residents of Socastee. Myrtle Beach is a beautiful wide open beach complete with a fishing pier, camping in the woods right next to the beach and general beach fun. Myrtle Beach is one of America’s top tourist destinations due to its diversity, accessibility and sheer beauty. Other beaches prosper in the area, including Huntington Beach State Park and Surfside Beach, as well as a number of water parks. Myrtle Waves Water Park is the most popular, boasting twenty acres of different water attractions ranging from adrenaline rushing water slides to a peaceful swim along the lazy river. A number of golf courses are in the Socastee area as well, particularly in Myrtle Beach. Some of the most popular include Arrowhead Country Club, Legends Resorts and the Classic Golf Group.
